The Introverted Artist is a 2018 photo series project presented by 2017 AFRIMA award winner, Asikey in collaboration with Creative Director & Artist, Arinze Mustapha Femi, Photographer & Videographer, Michael Jayeola, Studio EA Ideale, and Stylist, Victoria Rosange. It is intended to tell the story of Asikey as The Introverted Artist in a series of intentional, dialogue inciting picture episodes spread out through the year.
Last year when we interviewed Asikey George, she was hopeful and at a point, prophetic. And yes, she later won the AFRIMA nomination for Best Inspirational Female Artiste. It seems that every day, the young musician is reinventing herself. She is not just a musician, but a storyteller who is filled with so much positivity to go around — the people working with her note that she is focused and in life, inspirational. She goes for what she wants.
There’s a myth that only the sanguine souls among us are creative, maybe because they are talkative and playful, but a close look to even the literary space suggests that most of the world’s brilliant writers were introverts, deciding to put words to paper, instead of saying them vocally — same thing with painters; same with musicians, and other creative disciplines.
And speaking about Ms George, there’s only one word to describe her: introverted. She allows you to do all the talking, while she does all the winning.
Joining the league of international artists who are doing incredible things with experimentation and storytelling like Beyoncé and Sia Fuller, Asikey, on Twitter launched the #IntrovertedArtist campaign, highlighting her major breakthrough, through her years as an undergrad of University of Nigeria, Nsukka, to the years she decided to take music seriously.
This campaign is meant to inspire anyone who might think they’re ‘crazy & weird’ and questioning their place in the universe. You are not alone, Asikey George is with you.
Below is her story and some stunning pictures of her, taken on the Lagos major and minor roads, and suburbs… and to view more or join tell your own #IntrovertedArtist story, use the hashtag, or @ her via @Asikey_George. She’ll holler back with choco candies.
Asikey was born the fourth child into a family of 6 children; a loner and a core introvert, she found solace only in Music. She nursed the life path for years until she had harnessed the courage to share it with the world. As a teenager, she was what she calls a bedroom musician, her friend(s) would come over sometimes and demand an acoustic performance. This first set of photos is a visual representation of the first step – the artist putting out herself regardless of her own accustomed nature.
